Anne and Bob - Trip to Grand Canyon - June 6-28, 2016
(if you open individual pictures in a new tab you can get a larger version)
Friday, June 22 we awoke in the home of Leland and Debby Swenson (and family) in Arroyo Grande. Leland had been a visiting psychology professor at the Education department of the University of Gothenburg in the mid 1990s when I was there. Debby, Leland and their sons certainly made us feel very welcome.
I was up first in the morning and went out to explore the property. I stumbled across a somewhat hidden door in the rock with a sign “Swenson Art Cave”. I opened the “door” and went in and found myself in an unbelievable network of tunnels and rooms that Leland had carved out beneath their property. Anne and I later got a guided tour by Leland. Mostly 6 meters underground and up towards a 100 m of tunnel with many rooms. The tunnel and rooms are decorated with drawings, sculptures, etc. mostly creating b y Leland and are often images taken from Nordic mythology. I have included a few pictures here, but recommend looking at least at the first of the following links to other pictures of this tremendous piece of art which has taken Leland over 20 years to dig and construct. http://mustangnews.net/cal-poly-caveman-psychology-lecturer-builds-art-caves-house/# The second picture in the article above enters into an interactive "film" of the cave. You can advance around the entire tunnel or rotate a number of degrees to enter one of the rooms. On the walls of the tunnel and the rooms are a huge number of drawings and structures mostly of ceramic. Each of Leland's children and his wife had a room, but there are a number of other rooms dedicated to different things. It will take you at lest 20 minutes to explore the who cave. |

Don't miss it. I promise you've never seen anything like it. |

Some miscellaneous pictures showing the inside and outside of the property with the Swenson art cave. The cave doesn't go under the house but a large part of the rest of the property.
