Tuesday, June 19 we headed off for Lone Pine where I’d read that they had filmed old westerns with one of my boyhood favorite cowboy films with the Lone Ranger and Tonto as well as another favorite, Roy Rogers.
On the way to Lone Pine we passed through Death Valley which wasn’t on our original plan (but necessary to pass through.) When I saw the first sign I remembered my public school days and that Death valley was the lowest place in the world with no way for the water to run out. Sure enough, we went over hills 1200 m high to get there and over hills 1500 m high to get out. The lowest point we reached was 30 m BELOW sea level and so the short video I took was theoretically 30 m under water! Death Valley is also noted as the place with the highest recorded temperature, namely 57*C, but on Tuesday it was only 44*C. If you read the list "Desert Survival" you will note that under wildlife, they say to "never place hands or feet where you cannot see first." And "be alert for rattlesnakes, scorpions, and black widow spiders." |
