Wednesday, June 20 was to visit movie “sets” for two of my childhood idols, Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger. These were two men who fought for the right and always seemed to manage to conquer the bad guys without hurting anyone, at least they didn’t kill anyone. They were expert shots who could shoot the revolvers out of the bad guys’ hands. They with their partners, Roy with Dale (and of course his horse Trigger), and The Lone Ranger with Tonto (and naturally his horse Silver), where perfect heroes who never made mistakes and always solved the problem.
There was a museum in Lone Pine which documented hundreds of films that were at least partly shot in the area and most of the pictures here are from the museum. Most of the films were westerns but even part of Star Wars was filmed here. The wooden buildings are no longer standing, but much of the filming was done among the often very unusual stone formations in the nearby Alabama hills. The set of pictures of rock include the canyon into which the 6 Texas Rangers were lured and then ambushed. Tonto then nursed back to health the lone ranger who had been left as dead. |
